Hiring A Wedding Marquee

In Britain we are blessed with a huge range of fabulous wedding venues for both the ceremony itself,  and the reception.  The couple-to-be can choose anything from a traditional church, to a hotel, stately home or even a castle.

But what if you want something a bit different?  Have you considered hiring a marquee for your wedding day?   Marquees provide an excellent alternative to more traditional wedding venues, and are becoming increasingly popular in Britain.

When you think of a marquee wedding, you probably imagine a beautiful summer’s day, the merest trace of a breeze lifting the scent of flowers across the manicured lawn, and groups of guests enjoying strawberries and cream in the sunshine.  Then, as the sun goes down, you can party long into the night with plenty of space to enjoy your special day.

Of course things don’t always go exactly to plan - the weather may not be as perfect, or the lawn quite as smooth and lush as in your dream - but with careful planning in advance, a marquee wedding could still be the perfect venue for your wedding day.

What are the main advantages of a Marquee Wedding?

There are lots of reasons to choose a marquee for your wedding day.  The first of these is flexibility:  A marquee can be decorated in many different ways, so you will be able to tailor the appearance of the space to your own taste much more easily than in a traditional venue.

You can also be more flexible on timing:  Many couples are surprised to find that traditional wedding venues can be quite inflexible about the time your reception must end.  The last thing you want is to have to call a halt to procedings just when everyone’s having a great time.  Depending where you site it, a marquee can be much more flexible in this respect, and allow you to party on into the small hours of the morning if that’s what you want.

A marquee can also be a very cost effective way to have a fabulous wedding - particularly if you are planning to invite a lot of guests:   When you start planning your wedding, it’s often surprising just how quickly your guest list grows.  It’s not easy to leave people out - and all those aunts, uncles and cousins soons add up.  If you have lots of friends to invite too, the guest list is often a lot bigger than you expected.

The next shock comes when you look at the maximum number of guests a lot of wedding venues can accommodate - often a lot fewer than you’d think - and the venues that can accommodate huge numbers of guests charge accordingly.
A marquee can be the perfect answer to this classic wedding-planing dilemma:  If you have a large garden (or a relative with a large garden!), then hiring a marquee can be extremely cost effective.

And if you’ve found your dream venue, but they just can’t fit all your guests in, many venues can accommodate a marquee in the grounds, which means you can have the best of both worlds - your dream wedding venue - and all your family and friends in attendance for your special day.

Finally, there’s a special atmosphere about a marquee wedding (as you’ll know if you’ve been to a good one), which a lot of traditional venues struggle to match:  An attractive marquee, beautifully decorated and lit, is something out of the ordinary, and immediately feels special.

How much does it cost to hire a Marquee?

The cost of marquee hire varies a lot - and depends mainly on the size of the marquee you want to hire.  You can hire a small marquee for as little as £500 (though this would only be suitable for the smallest of gatherings).  At the other end of the scale, you could pay as much as £5000 or even more for a luxury marquee that will accommodate a large wedding in comfort.

As a rule of thumb, you can estimate the cost of marquee hire on a per guest basis:  £17 per person will pay for a relatively simple marquee, but should still include some sort of matting or carpet, and basic lighting and furniture hire.   Alternatively, if you’re looking for a luxury marquee with all the latest features, including heating, state-of-the-art lighting, superb furniture and a wooden floor, you could easily spend £50 per person.

Your best bet is to contact several marquee hire firms in your area, and get some quotes.

What sort of Marquees are available to hire?

There’s a huge variety of shapes and sizes, from the very traditional, to striking modern designs - so you’re sure to find something to fit the style of your wedding.

Traditional marquees have poles within the structure, to keep it upright.  While these are not unattractive, and can be decorated with flowers etc, you do lose some flexibility with internal layout and seating with this type of marquee - though for many, the traditional appearance makes this worthwhile.

Modern marquees are constructed on an aluminium frame, and do not require poles within the marquee itself to support the structure - thus giving more space and flexibility within the marquee.

Ask your Marquee company which sort they offer, and to show you photos of both types if they have them, so that you can choose which style and layout you prefer.

How long is the hire period?

A weekend hire often includes the Saturday and the Sunday, with the marquee being removed on the following Monday, so you’re free to use it on both days if you wish.

Again, this can vary from company to company, so talk to some marquee hire firms in your area to find out how they operate.

Are Marquees only suitable for Summer Weddings?

No - a well constructed modern marquee is waterproof even in heavy rain, so although a sunny day would be ideal, you will still benefit from the airy spacious atmosphere and beautifully decorated environment that a marquee can offer even if the weather isn’t kind.

Don’t worry about the cold either - just make sure your marquee hire company can supply marquee heating.   Modern marquee heating is thermostatically controlled, and the heater itself can be situated outside, with just the warm air ducted inside, so that your marquee stays at the perfect temperature throughout your event.  Indirect fired heaters are the best for this application, as they ensure there will be no fumes in the warm air.

How do I choose a Marquee Hire Company?

The first step is to take a look on the web for Marquee Hire companies in your area.  Make sure you have several to choose from.

Then contact each company in turn, find out what sizes and styles of marquee they can provide.  Make sure you see lots of photographs.  A well-designed and constructed modern marquee, decorated for a wedding is a beautiful thing - and the firm should have the photos to prove it.  If they don’t - find someone else - you don’t want to risk being disappointed on the day.

If your date is already chosen, then see which firms have availability on that day.  Don’t delay this step - with marquee hire becoming an increasingly popular option in Britain, you don’t want to miss out on your first choice.

Price will be a factor too - so get several quotes.  If your ideal marquee is a bit too expensive, don’t be afraid to negotiate - depending how busy they are, they may be prepared to be a little flexible if the competition is undercutting them.

Finally, don’t forget to ask for testimonials from previous customers, to make sure things turn out as good as they look in the photos.
Why not ask around among your friends - if  they’ve been to a great wedding in a marquee, perhaps you can track down the company that supplied it - there’s nothing like a recommendation from someone you trust.

What else should I think about?

One thing that puts some people off the idea of a marquee wedding is the toilet facilities.  The idea of long queus of guests in their finest outfits queuing for a dodgy looking portaloo is enough to give a bride-to-be nightmares.

But with a bit of forward planning, it doesn’t need to be like that:  There are now companies that will provide mobile toilets that rival those in an upmarket hotel for luxury.  Talk to your marquee hire company - if they don’t provide suitable toilet facilities themselves - they may be able to recommend a local firm that do.

The other thing that is often forgotten is the need for electricity on the site where the marquee is to be erected.  Your marquee will need lighting, and if you’re having a band, they will probably need access to electricity as well - so discuss this with your marquee hire company to make sure you have access to sufficient electricity to power your marquee safely.

Conclusion

There are many reasons to choose a Marquee for your wedding day, not least that it can provide the most spectacular and memorable venue imaginable.

Choose your Marquee hire firm with care, do your research, and you’ll be well on the way to having a marquee wedding to remember.
