Looking Good For Your Wedding Photos
So, the big day has arrived, all the preparations completed, everything booked and sorted, cars arriving shortly, final adjustments to your dress, last bit of make up applied. All the guests are waiting to see the beautiful bride and you are now ready to proceed with the best day of your life, and its all going to be captured on camera. BUT, you hate having your photo taken, you always look weird, and you just hope your wedding photographer will do his best.
OK. Your photographer may be very experienced at what they do, but there are things that you can do to help your wedding photographs be a success.
Imagine a famous celebrity who is regularly exposed to the public through the media, they don’t become famous one day and then always look good on camera overnight. They have formal training how to look in the public eye. Take the Queen, probably one of the most photographed people in the world, she has a well trained and practised expression for each occasion as there is always a camera pointing towards her, the second she produces an expression that doesn’t fit the occasion, its front page news ‘ the Queen frowned yesterday’.
Well, that’s probably taking it to the extreme, but just a few simple rules can certainly help with the way you want to look on your photos.
Remember, everyday of your life you look in the mirror and only see your reversed image, you rarely see yourself as other people see you. If you look through the mirror and look at your reflection through a second mirror, this is how you look on a photograph and to the world, and it may seem strange.
Although your wedding photographer will go a long way into making your photography as comfortable as possible, I have devised a short list of what, in my experience, consider to be a great help in producing top class photography for both formal and candid photography :
1. Practice your smile and expressions, try to build a muscle memory of the way you would like to look on your photos, its easy to produce a false smile at will and this will normally look false. It may help to think happy thoughts as this can trigger a natural expression. Either do this through a mirror (or 2 mirrors) or if you have a camera, take some test shots to view and practice, and decide which looks you like. Above all keep happy thought during the day.
2. Remember the old teachers tale 'keep your back straight'. Well that's probably overdoing it, but do practice your stance, don’t slouch too much and yet don’t be too upright and stiff, Don't be in a rush when walking, just a nice steady happy pace and a nice confident happy stance does work.
3. One of the biggest hidden culprits, STRESS. Remember this is one of the happiest days of your life, its your day, everybody is here to celebrate your happiness. RELAX, enjoy the experience, don’t worry how granny is getting to the reception or if the cake has been delivered, it will be sorted. If you feel stressed, relax your shoulders and exhale. Being stressed or having your thoughts elsewhere, while being photographed, definitely does not work. Enjoy, relax and let everyone else do the work. (especially if you have paid for it)
4. Use your best man or chief bridesmaid, their job is to look after you, if you want something eg. a drink etc, don’t go running yourself, ask them to get it for you.
5. The photographer is there to capture you at your best, so do enjoy the photography and relax, some people are more nervous in front of the camera than being in front of a dentists drill in their. If you are one of these, imagine the camera is a friend you are having a good time with or associate the camera with a good memory.
If we could sum it all up in one word. ENJOY.
