How to Save Money on Wedding Invitations

In your hunt for the perfect wedding invite, I’m sure you have come across the stylish Pocketfold Invitation.  There is often a lot of information you would like your wedding guests to have that you don’t want to include on the main invitation: maps, menu choices, gifts lists, accommodation details..... the list goes on.  With the pocketfold, you don’t have to worry.  All the extra bits tuck neatly away into the pocket inside, leaving a neat and stylish invitation.  It’s also a handy space to store your RSVP card and envelope.  Sounds good, doesn’t it?  But what if your budget is a bit tight -can you still have the professional pocketfold look?

The obvious option is to try and DIY and there are plenty of options around for the crafty bride.  Making your own invitations can be fun but if you have a lot of invitations to make, would like matching on the day stationery, or just feel that you already have plenty to do with organising your wedding without having to make seventy invitations then this guide is for you!

The way the designer set the cost of the invitation is usually based on the number and quality of products used and the time it takes to make it.  Obviously the quality of products isn’t something you want to compromise on but you could limit the number of embellishments.  A relatively plain exterior can look very stylish and the inside can be decorated with printed designs and cheaper embellishments - ask for fake diamantes rather than Swarovski crystals, ask the designer if it would be possible to have one less mulberry rose.  Certain techniques used to make invitations are time consuming - the plainer the design the less time it will take to make and therefore the less it should cost you.  Plain designs can look really stylish - stick to different shades of one colour or go really bold and contrasting - plain doesn’t have to be boring!!!  Ask your invitation designer to help if you’re stuck for ideas.

Another thing to consider is posting your invitations - keeping embellishments to a minimum means you are more likely to be able to post them as letters rather than large letters - another reason to go for simple pocketfold style.  This could save you 25p per invitation - for fifty invitations that’s £12.50 - not to be sniffed at! Send with a 2nd class stamp and save a further 9p per invitation. (Prices correct April 2010)

Ask yourself if you are happy to write all your guests’ names onto the invitations and address all the envelopes by hand.  Most stationers will charge to print them for you, so you could make a saving by writing them out.

You want your guests to RSVP promptly - the best way to persuade them to do that is to include an RSVP card and a stamped, pre addressed envelope with your pocketfold.  But to save money, consider including an e mail address to RSVP to instead - people can reply straight away and at no cost to them - so it’s a better way to cut costs than including an RSVP card but no stamp or envelope.  You could even set up a wedding website that people could log on to to RSVP - and include information about gift lists, directions, hotels etc, again saving on the number of inserts you need.

You will need to convey information to your guests - be that to let them know the names and prices of local hotels, to offer them menu choices or to tell them about your gift list.  Most pocketfold invitation designers offer inserts which match your stationery and look lovely - but can cost up to £1 each.  So, if you are on a budget, a good 2nd best is to buy some good quality A4 paper in white or ivory and print a ‘Guest Information Sheet’ yourself.  You can include as much information as you like.  Once you have it printed, fold it into quarters and tie a 3mm satin ribbon in your bridesmaid dress colours around it as if you were wrapping a present and pop it in the pocket.  It will look understated and stylish.

Just one point to note - you only need to send out one invitation per household.  Don’t make the mistake of ordering one per guest! You wouldn’t be the first.  Over ordering will cost you ££££ and leave you very cross!  You should order a few extras in case you make a mistake when writing them out, and don’t forget to order yourself one for your wedding album.

Your ‘On the Day’ stationery can really add to the tone of the wedding - favours bringing that bit of colour to the tables, a beautiful table plan gives that elegant feel.  If you go the whole hog and buy order of service, menus, place cards, table numbers, table plans etc you can really bump up your stationery cost.  You need to have an ‘Order of Service’  of some description so people know what’s happening and know the words to the hymns.  But you don’t need a fancy booklet - have an order of service card to cut costs, you can still incorporate your colour scheme and have one to keep but it’s likely to cost much less.  Likewise with the Menu - people like to know what they are eating, but a card works equally well.  You could even combine the two and have an ‘Order of the Day’ booklet - include the Ceremony details, when and what you are eating and where the guests are sitting - meaning one booklet instead of two and a table plan.

It is traditional to have wedding favours at the table.  Actually, it is only traditional to leave a favour for the ladies, but most couples choose to include the men too.  But if you’re really on a budget, do away with favours altogether.  Nobody would really mind.  If you want to have favours on the table but limit costs - how about giving everyone an envelope and hand writing a card inside to say you have donated to charity instead of buying individual favours - then you can choose how much you want to give AND you can feel as if you have given something back.  You could also use the envelopes to double as place settings to avoid the need for separate ones.
Place cards are another area you can save money.  As mentioned above, attaching a name card to the favours eliminates the need for them altogether.  But if you’re going for the traditional place settings, ask your designer if they are cheaper if they don’t print them for you - then you can hand write them when you receive them.  This will also add a nice personal touch to the day.

So, as you can see, you can make savings and still have those perfect pocketfolds.  Don’t think you can’t have them just because of your budget - e mail the designer, tell them your budget and ask if they can make an invitation to meet it.  Happy invitation shopping!!!!!
