Baking your own wedding cake is something that everybody can have a go at and can be practiced well in advance. You don’t have to be a Delia Smith to bake a cake.

Fruit cake actually improves with age and if it goes wrong you will still have time to try again or to then go to a professional company.
If you do not already have the cake tins or don’t know any friends or family that you can borrow them off, it is possible to hire them but this will increase the price, and this will have to be considered as well as the cost of all the ingredients.

Likely equipment required to bake your own wedding cakes are: large mixing bowl, scales, cake tins for each tier, cake boards, large containers to store them in. Then you have all the decorating tools to ie rolling pin and all the icing tools for making sugar roses unless you are considering buying readymade decorations. And don’t forget depending on how many tiers you are thinking of happening you will need a cake stand.

If you are making your cake to save costs, then it might be worth considering buying a readymade iced cake from a supermarket. Most supermarkets sell ready-iced cakes which you can decorate yourself. Most sugar craft shop sell a large selection of decorations that can just be attached to the cake for a professional look.

If you don’t want a traditional cake or are worried about making a fruit cake, cupcake towers are becoming very popular and cupcake stands can be bought from a variety of high street shops relatively cheaply. This does mean that as a couple you wouldn’t be able to ‘cut the cake’ but you could share the top cake or have a larger cake at the top especially for you to cut.

The best piece of advice if you are intending to make your own cake is to give yourself plenty of time and bake it in advance so you have plenty of time to practice.
